Literary works

COPIBEC
COPIBEC, the Société québécoise de gestion collective des droits de reproduction, is a non-profit corporation composed of associations of people or legal entities of rightholders in the literary sector (books, newspapers, magazines and journals).

COPIBEC consists of two founding members, l’Union des écrivaines et des écrivains québécois (UNEQ) and the Association nationale des éditeurs de livres (ANEL), and of four " active members " being the Association des journalistes indépendants du Québec (AJIQ), the Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec (FPJQ), the Société de développement des périodiques culturels québécois (SODEP) and Quebec’s Dailies.

COPIBEC’s main duty is to manage the copyrights, in Quebec, of rightholders that have signed an agreement to this effect with COPIBEC; it acts therefore on behalf of thousands of Canadian publishers and writers. COPIBEC represents also rightholders of many foreign countries such as Australia, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Netherlands, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States thanks to bilateral agreements reached with other collective agencies. COPIBEC is also a member of the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO).

More specifically, COPIBEC grants licensed users of copyright protected works the necessary authorisation to reproduce experts of books, newspapers, magazines and journals in its Repertoire. Most licenses conferred by COPIBEC are for the reproduction of literary works on paper support, expressly for photocopying. However, the organisation may also authorise users to reproduce literary works on alternative supports, including Braille, large characters, etc. and on electronic mediums such as Intranet, Internet and CD-ROM.

To obtain a reproduction license

Any users wishing to reproduce one or many experts of published literary works (books, newspapers, magazines or journals) must contact COPIBEC to obtain a reproduction license. Users should forward the complete bibliographical reference of the experts chosen (title, author, publisher, date and place of publication). COPIBEC will then inform the user of the clauses of the license (length of the expert, duration of the license, etc.) and of the royalty fees established for the copying of the works. In the case where the work chosen is not in its Repertoire or when the reproduction can not be granted, COPIBEC sees to contact the rightholders in order to obtain the required authorisation.
For further information or to obtain the authorisation to reproduce experts of books, newspapers, magazines or journals, please contact COPIBEC.
